Powering history. Elevating Communities.
Our Mission
American Institutional Restoration (AIR) is an organization dedicated to preserving America's institutional history by rescuing, restoring, researching, and interpreting historical artifacts, documents, medical equipment, and other culturally significant objects from hospitals, educational institutions, government agencies, and public service organizations. We believe that every artifact tells a story of innovation, sacrifice, and service that deserves to be preserved for future generations. Through professional conservation, historical research, educational programming, and public exhibitions, AIR transforms forgotten pieces of history into powerful educational resources that inspire appreciation for the people and institutions that helped shape our communities. By preserving the past, we create opportunities for learning, foster civic pride, and ensure that important chapters of American history remain accessible to the public.
At the heart of AIR's mission is a commitment to creating meaningful pathways out of homelessness in San Diego County. Rather than offering only temporary assistance, AIR provides individuals experiencing or transitioning out of homelessness with paid employment, hands-on vocational training, mentorship, and professional development in fields such as historical restoration, collections management, museum operations, archival preservation, woodworking, photography, exhibit design, research, administration, and community outreach. Employees gain marketable skills, steady work experience, and a supportive environment where they can rebuild confidence, establish financial stability, and prepare for long-term careers. AIR works to remove barriers to employment by partnering with local shelters, workforce development organizations, educational institutions, and community service providers to connect participants with housing assistance, transportation, healthcare, and additional support services that strengthen their path toward independence.
AIR believes that preserving history and restoring lives are inseparable goals. Every artifact restored represents more than the conservation of an object—it represents an opportunity to invest in a person's future. Donations and community support allow AIR to rescue historically significant collections that might otherwise be lost while simultaneously creating sustainable employment opportunities that empower individuals to regain stability, dignity, and purpose. Through this dual mission, AIR preserves America's institutional heritage, strengthens communities through education, and demonstrates that history can serve as a powerful catalyst for economic opportunity, personal transformation, and lasting social impact throughout San Diego County and beyond.
